Honestly, my reaction to the new spiderman thing wasn’t, “He’s black and latino?!?”. It was, “They killed off Peter Parker?!?!”. But then I remembered that I don’t even really care about comic books.
I wonder whether these people realize that comic book heroes aren’t real. They are made up. No one is “supposed” to be anything. The artist is at liberty to do whatever they want. Even in the world of make believe, there is racism. Incredible!
in high school, one of my teachers made everyone take out a sheet of looseleaf paper and write their names at the top. the instructions were: pass those sheets around the classroom so our fellow classmates could write anonymous (positive) comments about us. i don’t remember what class this was in, but this definitely wasn’t part of the lesson plan.
the two that still stick out to me today are:
’cool shoes’ & ‘you are loved’
i remember scanning the room, trying to figure who wrote ‘you are loved’… the mystery has never been solved, but it’s times like these when i thank that person for writing that on my sheet of paper… because sometimes i forget.
(and i think i still have that sheet of paper.)
